Incorporation NOW. Forming a solid team of passionate contributors. Build these memories while you can!

The LYB Directors have been working behind the scenes to get our nonprofit up and running.  We were able to hit a few key milestones these past few weeks and we are excited to share what has been accomplished thus far!

Love Your Buns Non-Profit Incorporation

Incorporating a non-profit is in retrospect, reasonably simple, but having just gone through it, can be easy to overlook details that cause big delays.

Step one was incorporating as a non-profit corporation with the Secretary of State of North Dakota.  The forms to fill out for this were not too intensive, and actually, the specific statement of purpose and provisions are not very restrictive.  The key thing for us to watch out for there was keeping in mind what we would need for a documented purpose and provisions as it relates to tax exemption with the IRS.   With that in mind, our incorporation took a little longer than it otherwise would have needed.  But we are indeed incorporated!

Step two was for us to form our organization, specifically meaning that we needed to get serious about what Love Your Buns would be about (mission statement), and who we believed would be great key players to add to our board.

With that, please join me in celebrating the first official announcement of the Love Your Buns board of directors!  Meet the team:

Step Three - Now that we had a board forming, and were getting incorporated, we needed to decide a bit more about what LYB will be about and how we govern ourselves.  For that, we established and documented Bylaws.

The process of preparing the bylaws was somewhat extensive – but again this is probably another situation where we could have gotten by with a smaller document, outlining a much smaller number of clauses and provisions.  But this organization and its future is important to us, so we were thorough.  The board can tell you – our review, revision and finalization of the bylaws was very time consuming!

As this was yet another key requirement for establishing our hopeful 501(c)(3) status – we're happy that the bylaws are complete and filed away for safe keeping.

Step Four in working towards 1023 filing for 501(c)(3) status was establishing our organization with our EIN (Employer Identification Number). While we aren't starting off or expecting to have employees in the near future, this is a requirement of many things we need to accomplish, including in filing form 1023, creation of bank accounts or establishing a PO Box.

Finally our next step was the actual 1023 filing for 501(c)(3) tax exempt status. We have since completed the filing process and now that all of the prior steps have been completed, we are currently and eagerly awaiting notice from the IRS.

Bank Account

Last Friday our family had an hour window of time to run to a local bank to open up a LYB checking account.  We were impressed by the knowledge and ease at which the customer service rep was able to set up our account.

This will allow us to do quite a bit more with our fundraising and merchandising efforts, as well as enabling us to more effectively drive forward our mission into the local Fargo/Moorhead community and beyond!

Social Media Presence

Outside of Facebook, we also have an Instagram account and LinkedIn page. If you are active on these platforms, please consider following us there as well to get additional updates that may not be seen on Facebook.

Personal Update

Build these memories while you can

I’ll be returning to work next week after three months away. While in some ways it has felt like a long time, it has also flown by. This time has also allowed me to take control of my health as much as I can. I’ve been walking very regularly, increasing mileage and intensity over time. Long term hopes definitely include running and other ways of increasing fitness. I’ve been on a strict supplement regimen, which mainly contains anti inflammatory compounds. My diet has improved drastically, however, my sweet tooth occasionally wins.

It has been wonderful to step away from the demands of a working mother and have this extra time to spend with my family. It’s so easy to imagine that your time on this earth is not finite, and that tomorrow will always be here. Fully realizing the phrase: “Life is Short” is a true statement, it doesn’t come into focus until you are forced to acknowledge it.

As I look at my 3-year-old, I can’t help but wonder if he’ll remember our bedtime routine, me singing him lullabies, or that I call him “my favorite little one”? For my older children, have I been the right kind of influence and caretaker? Have I done enough to teach them that being a kind person is the most important strength one can possess?

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
Ephesians 4:32

So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience;
Colossians 3:12

Make memories at every opportunity, for memories of time with those we love far outweigh all earthly possessions and shape us all in so many ways. If you get the chance to step out of your everyday routine and embrace what life should be about - seize every opportunity. Do something new. Learn a new skill. Read a book or twenty with your child. Laugh and be silly, sing songs and make art.

Build these memories while you can.

Love Your Buns is a non-profit initiative aiming to remove stigma and improve awareness around rectal cancer, its prevalence and its symptoms. A growing epidemic in young adults, rectal cancer is easy to remove if caught early, however due to a variety of reasons, young adults are not likely to seek screening options like colonoscopies. This gap in screening is leading to more advanced disease at diagnosis and more challenging and strenuous treatment. We're working to Educate young adults to increase awareness of the signs and increasing prevalence of Rectal Cancer and to Empower informed decision making and Improve quality of life in Survivorship.
